In your profile you chose what you are from Amateur to Pro and this does make me wonder, how people chose

There are people posting here who have said "I only have this one lens and I shoot in a "business""............. or have posted what I consider to be horizon sloping out of focus shots and called themselves PRO or Semi-pro, others have posted great images as "amateurs".

How do people rate themselves, it makes me wonder.

The definition of a PRO (anything) is a person who earns most of their living from a line of work, so a "pro" earns 90%+ from photography, me I class myself as Semi-Pro to Pro because photography IS my work and living, I am also a registered "photo Journalist" and hold a UK Press card with the NUJ. Do others list themselves as PRO because it sounds good or becasue they think a few years taking photos makes them a PRO.

Also these days you see more and more facebook sites with "John Smith Photography" or "Samanther Class Photography" in fact they mean "Photographer NOT Photography as Photography imples a "working business" but is that because they have no idea or they like to sound good.

Just wondered.

Been reading a few of your posts, mainly as every one else is having Christmas unlike us :D, i would not dispute a lot of your statements but things have always been like that, in the 80s when we had a thriving wedding and portrait studio only using 120 film we had the upstart :D 35mm users trying to muscle in, doing weddings with only one camera and all 36 shots on one roll,we used three 120 Hasselblad backs as a safety factor, this meant it would take one hell of a disaster for the wedding couple to end up with no images.
You really are going to drive yourself mad trying to block the upstarts with common sense and logic IMO.

You must be from the UK.
In the US, mostly politicians talk about classes as they try and divide the population. The last thing I worry about is, what class my neighbor or what class do I belong to.
Let me give you an example. We have a Meet and Greet every year in Florida, where a bunch of members on this forum get together for a days. We come from different states and a few come from Canada.
I don't even know what anyone really does for a living, nor anything about their "social status" in life. It doesn't matter to me at all. We all just love photography and that is enough for us.

As for your original post. I'm a professional hobbyist.:encouragement:

I do not make a living with my camera, but I am paid to take photographs, though not of the sort that I post here, which are taken for my own pleasure alone. I use "Semi-Pro" because I do not like the word "Hobbyist;" if we had an option for "Non-Pro," I would use that instead.

ive seen many self labeled pros who make money from their camera as their career and who I would not call a pro. so even payed "pros" suck. they should be called paid amateur.

I would like this forum to stay un-judgmental. It is none of MY business to decide how one is to describe himself nor telling him what he is or is not.

This is also meant to warn @Jr1 that this forum is meant to be friendly and political polemics are NOT welcomed. If you have nothing better to do than advise others of how they should describe their profiles, than please restrain from posting.

I'm much more interested in discussing my interest in photography than I am in trying to pigeon-hole myself or other people, here or elsewhere, who share my interest. And while I don't want to speak for others I think that's a fairly common sentiment here on Nikonites.

Even pros have a bad day once in a while. I've paid for some bad pro photo services, and seen lots of bad (paid) pro wedding photo results.

It was not intended to be a comment regarding how people here describe themselves, but how people perceive others and themselves, it was a general comment hence

"Also these days you see more and more facebook sites with "John Smith Photography" or "Samanther Class Photography" in fact they mean "Photographer NOT Photography as Photography imples a "working business" but is that because they have no idea or they like to sound good.

Sorry to any offended people
