Lens filter; help

Okay so I just purchased a 200-500mm lens for surf photography. I really want to get a lens filter (mostly to protect the lens from scratching). Only thing is I'm not sure which type of filter I should get. Can anyone help me here? Thanks -UNK

My first question to you would be: did you buy this lens online or in a local photography store? If at a store, the salesman should be able to tell you what size and kind to get. Otherwise, get yourself a UV filter or a Haze 1 filter.

If you're only interested in protection then just get a protector filter, which will have the least impact on your images. UV, Skylight, Haze and Polarisers all change the UV light hitting your sensor (mainly changing the quality of blue light).

UV filters will remove that blue tinge you get in strong light, they are "clear" glass.

Skylight filters will warm an image, they have a pink coating to the glass.

Haze filters will again reduce blue tones but work well in dusty environments, they have a yellow coating.

Polarisers, while not as effective in reducing UV transmission, do reduce reflections, allowing for greater contrast.

These filters can be bought to allow different amounts of UV through and at different wavelengths, the uses of which entirely depend on the situations of the day.

So if you are looking to change your image at the time of capture, then I think a Polariser would suit your intended photography better. They are adjustable for the conditions and will provide greater definition between the sea and sky, while cutting reflection from the water.

However, if you find that haze really is an issue, which is quite possible at telephoto lengths and on a dusty beach, then a Haze filter will work better to get you clear images but with less contrast in the blues than a Polariser.

Sounds to me like Berkerk answered your question quite succinctly............get the polarizer.

Tell you the truth, he answered it in a lot more detail than I did! :)

Not sure about the polarizer here. UNK mentioned that he want to protect the lens first and that the lens will be used for surfing pics. My guess would be that he's going to need the fastest shutter speed possible. Now having the lens he has, I suspect that the maximum aperture when zoomed to the longest length will not be more than 5.6 or 6.3. If you add a polarizer, you'll loose at least 1-1.5 stop. This could very well prevent good and fast autofocus.
For this reason, I'd suggest just a haze or uv filter. They would be the cheapest to get (compared with the polarizer anyway).

Go onto Amazon and get the Opteka filter kit I bought. $20 for a UV, CPL, Fluorescent, ND+4, and Macro x10. Then you can play around with them and figure out what works for you.

No prob Will, the funny thing is that I still wait for the kit tripod to arrive (from late August...), and the filters I ordered from the US are expected in 4-5 days.... There must be a strong enought wall somewhere to bang my head...
