So what really happens....

Local shop has a special to tune my lens to my camera. Is this just a moneymaker? What happens when I change lenses?

Each lens needs to be tuned to the camera body. The Fine Focus Adj. is a database in the camera body that tracks each lens. They usually charge a fee for EACH lens.

I think it's just a money maker. None of my lenses have needed tuning on any of my bodies. Over the years, I've checked them with the DIY charts and they check out fine. I'm either lucky or blind.

Not sure if the D90 has that capability of fine tuning the lenses to that camera. I know the D7000 and up all do though. I have fine tuned all my lenses and it is well worth the effort in my opinion. It gives just the little extra sharpness I like for my bird in flight shots.

Me too, lucky or blind, but with maybe a dozen lenses, I've never considered the notion of messing with it. If there is a problem, I suppose we'd know it. And if we don't see a problem, then leave it alone.

I've tuned all my lenses. Most have needed some adjustment, a few have not. The difference is most definitely discernible. As Don points out it's not a matter of fixing what isn't broken, it's a matter of maximizing performance. Why *wouldn't* I want to get the most I can out of a particular lens/body combination? Especially when the total investment required is nothing more than a little time and effort on my part.
