Air Tatoo photos with Tamron 150-600mm

Last Friday a friend and I went to one of the "Pay & view" fields right across from the main stand at Fairford, Glos the venue for the Royal International Air Tatoo, it cost us £15 for the day versus around £45 on the airfield so providing we didn't want to wander the flight line static displays we had a great view of the action.

Unfortunately, the weather was dull, overcast with flat lighting and occasional rain and only in the afternoon did the sky turn blue and by then the majority of the flying was coming to an end.

I thought this was an ideal chance to try the Tamron 150-600mm on the D810 and see how they worked together - I was not dissapointed and many of the images are hand held.

The lens is super fast (and quiet) to focus and never missed a beat even when tracking, I am very happy and the results I am pleased with especially considering the poor conditions.

Sorry it is image heavy!

Thank you all, needless to say I am delighted with the combo and with the current offer of £100.00 rebate and 5yr guarantee it is a no brainer for those wanting a long zoom - saved for a while to get it and now on bread and water!!!

No regrets though.

Thanks Bourbon Neat, at least it brightened up for the team displays so the aircraft and smoke trails stood out more - time and money well spent!

A very nice set. Looks much better than my D7100 and Sigma 150-500mm, but I was shooting on a very hazy day on the coast of the Red Arrows display.

My friend was shooting with the Sigma 150-500mm and he is pleased with the results but still considering the Tamron, he likes the extra focal length and the IQ even though lenses are both almost the same size.

The Tamron is the perfect lens for airshows.

Great shots! I think the overcast wasn't too bad for your photos. For example, the first picture shows amazing amount of detail and it doesn't look flat at all. You had nice diffused light from all directions. On a sunny day it all depends when the aircraft is with respect to the sun. If you are unlucky, you just get silhouettes.

Thank you all for the feedback, there is no doubt that the overcast weather allowed shadowless images but lower contrast than bright weather, either way I am happy with the results and the lens is a real winner.

jay_dean - I was in Rhymes, a great venue with superb views if not perhaps a tad close at times - not complaining though!

Peter these are from the Friday and Vulcan was not flying, they are restricting airframe hours as this is its last year and I did hear RIAT was its last public appearance ever - I have got images from previous events though, still there were plenty of other aircraft.

Hi, I've just got the Tamron and plan using it on my D7100. If th IQ is even close to the pics you have posted, I'll be a very happy bunny indeed!

Great images... how did you find out about the pay and view thing.... Hubby and I want to go to an airshow (we used to be regulars before we had the family) but were stunned to find out just how much it was to go these days, and that you have to prebook, and if the weather is bad, you dont get your air display or your money back. We looked at RIAT, but it was going to cost around £200 for the day, no way could we justify that to ourselves :(
