Full moon shot 2-17-2011

There was slight haze between the cloud cover, so this is not as sharp as I would like. Maybe next full moon. I changed the WB to shade, because I like the gold color.

I like the color change, I think I'll try that next time also. I'm assuming you shot in RAW mode? I've been wondering how we can pick up more crater detail. It seems from some of my shots there is more crater detail near edges when the moon is not full, shadows or less direct light seem to bring them out

You get the best detail of the moon the closer it is to the horizon, due in part to the magnification caused by the atmosphere and also the filtering of the light caused by the same effect. When the moon is not full, there is less intense light and the camera can be set to a slower setting allowing the capture of detail.

Here's mine from tonight:
Moon1.jpg
I was using a manual lens (Kalimar 28-200mm with Tamron 2x teleconverter)
1/100, 400mm and I think I was on f8. I think if I had gone to f11 it might be sharper, I went down to f5.6 and it got more blurry... for some reason I didn't try f11. Oh well, next time. :)

Shot this one tonight also, I think it's time for a dedicated moon shot thread!

Same pic using the retouch skylight filter effect built into the D3100. Gives it a blue hue
