First of all, i want to congratulate you all for the beautifull forum and welcome myself here!I would like to inform you of the release of a new, free app for android phones/ tablets, which helps you understand in simple terms, how the settings of your camera (hardware setup & exposure settings) affect the photos you take. The changes in the photo are visualized with every change in settings, while simultaneously useful values, such as the depth of field , view angles etc, are calculated. It is an important tool for novice and advanced photographers!
You can find the app in Android Market (Google Play) here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ggramm.knowyourcamera
or by searching "KnowYourCamera" at the Market.
Waiting for your comments! If you like our effort, you are welcome to leave positive feedback at the Market! Thank you!

Welcome to nikonites! I hope you joined to participate more than just to share a link to your app. But cool looking app, and I hope it does well. :)

I thought of saying something similar, but less polite, but thought that perhaps I'd best keep quiet for now and see how the rest of this forum responds. I'm fairly new, here, myself.

It is usually considered very bad form to join a forum, just to advertise something. If your first or only post to a forum is such an advertisement, you can generally expect to be greeted much less warmly than you have here. Most forums I've been on would have simply banned you for this. Not all forums even allow such advertising at all, and those that do usually have a specific place to post such advertisements. It's really best, even on forums that allow any sort of advertising, not to do so until you've been a participating member of that forum for a while and established yourself as a part of the community which it represents. If you've joined very many forums, just to advertise your app, then do not be surprised if you go back and find that most of them have banned you and removed your posting, and don't be surprised if your ISP has received complaints about you spamming those forums. You might even get your app pulled from Google Play if they receive enough complaints about you spamming forums to advertise it.

Forums like this generally exist for people with a common interest to discuss that interest among themselves. They do not exist for outsiders to come in and advertise to the forum's members, and those who do so are usually not well-received.

That said, your app does look rather cool. It seems to me that you must have developed and tested it on a larger screen, such as a tablet, and haven't really given much thought to how well it'd work for someone with big fingers trying to use it on a smaller screen, such as a phone. I find it difficult to work the slider I intend to rather than the one above or below it. Also, consider a drop-down menu rather than a slider for the sensor sizes.

Hi Bob!
I agree with everything you say and if the moderators think my post is spam and delete it, i would understand. However, even if part of my intentions posting was to promote my app, i believe lots of users may find this post usefull and actually the little feedback so far, seems positive! There is a fine line between spaming and sharing info. So i hope this thread is perceived as a contribution to the forum and not an annoyance!

In my opinion, you've clearly crossed that line. You've admitted that you came to this forum, not initially intending to participate as a member of the community here, but simply to post an advertisement for your app. No matter how you spin it, this is simply not appropriate.

And it hasn't escaped my notice that your app contains advertising. Presumably, you receive money or some other valuable consideration from this advertising service when people use your app. So you're not just “sharing info”; you have a self-serving interest in getting people to use this app.
