I will try to keep everything that comes to mind in this thread, all these notorious questions that a beginner photographer like me has (we all did at one point) and would love some answers.
What on earth is fg / bg / dof and so on ???? stress kicks in and headaces arrive.

Well, here you can find all these questions answered, further questions by members on a specific subject should be added right under that individual post for easy reply by whoever has some extra information.

Finally, i would like to thank all the sites who provide openly all this information throughout the web, photozone , dpreview, ronbigelow, cambridgeincolour, naturephotographers.net, lexar.com, olympousdigitalschool.com

Man !!!! This info is amazing !!! Lets give a huge round of applause to Joohn for compiling all this amazing info, tips and tricks for all of us to use to pay it forward. A friend of mine just got her first DSLR, Nikon 3100 and I have been teaching her the functions and about Photograph in general, so this will be a huge asset to my teaching.

I have just discovered this gem of a thread. Thank you so much for taking the time to source all this information and put it in one easy to access place. I suspect I will be calling in here on a regular basis :) I have a question however that I have been unable to find the answer to and don't think it belongs under any of the other sections of the forum - possibly best here. But I am not sure I understand how you wanted us to post questions so as not to make a shambles of this thread. Do we just "reply to thread" or is there another way you wanted us to do it?

Many thanks

Well seeing as you made it so enticing :D

I'm very much a beginner in photography. My biggest frustration has been working long hours and not having much time to get out with my camera (I live in Scotland and it rains pretty much all year round!). So I decided to grow, I need to work with what I have. My challenge I have set myself is to learn something new every month, get the basics on the theory and then put it into practice by experimenting to let it sink in. So that's the background.

So right now I am trying to get a handle on setting a pre-set white balance. I know that the white/gray cards are pretty cheap to buy and thought I could spend the next few weeks experimenting with setting this myself using the cards. But there seems to be a bit of conflicting information out there as to whether to use a white or gray card and then the debate over the 12% vs 18% gray. I would welcome any thoughts on this. I am going to have to figure it out for myself for it to be worth anything to me, but it would help to get the card(s) first and I am not sure what to be looking for.

You must try to understand Grasshopper!

Sometimes the path to knowledge is an unusual destination!

Go Here www.morguefile.com/docs/classroom (Just click on the dang thang) for enlightenment.

Your questions will have a home. :p

Now that is right up my street. Something not all 'by the book' ... as I am not a 'by the book' kind of person. I saw your post as soon as it came in and clicked on the link and have been there since!

Now don't assume for a moment that this will put an end to my questions, lol! ;)
