Anyone heard of Marumi filters?

I'm torn between a Hoya HD and this Marumi Circular Polarizer at the moment. It's only got three reviews so far, but all are favorable on the Amazon. Just curious if I can get away with saving a few bucks on my CP, lol..

I've never heard of them, but they've never heard of ME either so I guess it's a wash! :)

I don't know if I should risk it. The Hoya HD is only about 30 dollars more and it's well established.. Though, If I'm using a lens hood, won't that get in the way of messing with a CP in the first place?

I have a Marumi 67mm (this one: Amazon.com: Marumi DHG MC CPL PL (D) 67mm 67 Slim Thin Filter Digital High Grade Japan: Camera & Photo) and I'm happy with it. If that's the one you're looking at, my review is one of the three on there. The construction is nice-metal ring and and actual glass filter. It rotates smoothly, but not loosely. Overall, the physical feel of it is very similar to the B&W grad filter that I have. I've only had it for a few months, but it's seen use about every weekend since then and is still holding strong.

The info claims mine is multicoated, and I've found nothing to dispute that yet. The only time I've seen glare is shooting almost directly into the sun.

From what I've read online, Marumi is a pretty big company in Japan but for some reason doesn't have that big of a footprint here. Depending on what size filter you're after, you're looking at saving up to $60-70. I'd wait to see what others have to say, since I'm just one guy (as Pete likes to say, "BWTHDIK?"), but I'm happy with mine. Good luck!

Depends on the lens. With a bayonet-style hood, I'll put mine on before I put the hood on and it makes it harder to rotate the filter once the hood is on, but it's definitely doable. The only real hassle is taking the hood off and on to put the filter on.

$30 isn't too bad of a difference. When I was shopping for mine I was looking at about $65 for the Marumi and $110 for the B&W. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

i got the marumi UV filter free with my 18-55 kit lens.
quite impressive.
i have the hoya UV on the 70-300, but somehow the marumi feels more 'snug in' to the lens.
could be cos of the sizes or whatever, but i don't think you will be disappointed with marumi.

Sweet, thanks for the info everyone! Pulled the trigger on a Marumi DHG MC CP for $52. I think that's a FREAKIN' steal if it's half as good as the reviews all claim. MrF, I got the exact one you did. BTW, this one is going on a 16-85 for what it's worth. Only really worried about how the hood will interact with the filter. However, the peace of mind on my $600 lens is worth a little work right? :)

Just as a heads up, here is some shots with and without the filter in use. Note however, that the one with the filter is more than I would normally use, though it shows what the filter is capable of at full-tilt polarizing.

Little processing applied when I shot these. Straight RAW into LR4, only lens correction and CA's removed. Nothing more. Exported full image to JPG and uploaded to Photobucket.

I have - trash. I bought one a 77mm to use on my Nikon 85 1.4 D I couldn't believe how much CA was present with the that filter, took it off no CA - so I deep sixed that sucker. Screwed a Hoya on it no more problems.

These Marumi's are f'ing sweet. I love it after shooting with it a few times. Shame I can't leave it on all the time :/ It just goes to show how buying cheap filters just isn't worth the hassle, right?
