Setting ring on Nikon D50mm 1:1.8 D Lense

I am looking for someone to explain to me the purpose of the locking switch on the inner ring (see image). Which position is the one to use, right now it is in 2.8. Does this mean it shoots in 2.8? Thanks for any help.

The lens is set to f/22, the minimum aperture for that lens. The switch just happens to be next to the 2.8 marking on the aperture ring and means nothing.

It will only lock when the lens is set to f/22. It keeps the aperture ring from being inadvertently turned... which will cause the camera to not fire the shutter because it will detect the problem.

Set your lens to f/22. Then lock the switch. From there you should be able to choose your aperture by using the wheel that controls the aperture setting - providing you are using a camera body that does that (most DSLR's do).
