Beeping sound from my Sigma 17-70mm

Just received my used Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS lens. Looks to be in good condition. Attached it to my D90, switched it on and the lens was making a quiet beeping sound almost like morse code (maybe someone is sending me a subliminal message). It is there whether it is on auto, manual, OS on or off. I have never heard a lens making this sort of noise before. I have never owned a Sigma lens so is this normal?

Thanks

Brian

If the lens is similar to the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM, it uses an ultrasonic (Hypersonic, in marketing parlance) motor for focusing. These motors can be smoother (less backlash or overshoot) than traditional electromagnet-based rotary motors, but apparently the "ultrasonic" ratcheting is not quite beyond your hearing range.

Google is your friend... There are more than a few threads in different forums about this issue with Sigma lenses. I just picked the answer from one that was self explanatory.

Thanks for that. I am sending it back and try to get one without this problem. MPB has a few so might exchange it. I quite like this lens though.
