Filter adapter rings

Don't know if this is the correct place, if not, I apologise. I have a 67mm ND filter and various other 67mm filters which I would like to use on my 58mm and 72mm lens filter screw. Would there be a problem with this? If not, would I need 58-67mm and 67-72mm adapters? Sorry if I seem a little stupid but cannot afford new filters for the different lenses. I don't have the 72mm lens yet but this is the one I am waiting for. A used Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS HSM Macro.

Thanks

Brian  (as usual)

Using a 67mm filter on a lens designed for 58mm filters won't cause any problem. Putting a 67mm filter on a 72mm lens may cause vignetting.

In either case, you may have issues with using the lens' hood, as well as you'll need different lens caps (unless you install and remove the adapter/filter every time you want to use the factory lens cap).

Thanks for that. Never even thought about the lens cap. Probably get a ND filter for 72mm. Might get a variable one relatively cheap.

If you go with the adapter rings, you would want a 58-67mm step up ring and a 72-67mm step down ring. The step down ring is the one that will cause some vignetting. ICE makes a decent ND filter. Variable ND filters generally don't get great ratings. Supposedly when the filter is rotated towards the stronger strength, the effect isn't even all over the image. So read those reviews!

This is for a set of 3 ICE ND filters (3-stop, 6-stop, and 10-stop) that would fit your 72mm lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...-0mcfRtpjkqDoRJK0IT9ncagkul2Pzc8aAgT7EALw_wcB

And here is a 10-stop ICE ND filter in 72mm: https://www.amazon.com/ND1000-Filter-Neutral-Density-Optical/dp/B00GNAZJD4

Another option is to look at a Cokin "P" set... You can find them on Amazon for about 1/2 the price of a single cheap circular ND filter and they come with a complete set of adapter rings and filters... They'll fit all your lenses...

Thanks for all of your very informative answers. Believe me they are much appreciated. I did use Cokin filters in the dim and distant past so will have another look at them. Are the filters as goos as the glass ones?

Yes...If you use the official Cokin branded filters. They are a bit picey bu no where near as some big name circular filters. The nice thing is, when you buy a single Cokin filter, with very few exceptions, it'll fit ALL your existing lenses... And it you want to really explore the universe of filters, for around $20 you can buy a complete knock-off set on Amazon... From there you can decide if you want to replace the individual knock-off brand filters with a more expensive Cokin...
