    Nikon 28-70mm f2.8D AF-S IF-ED focus issue

    Hello folks

I have a Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8D AF-S IF-ED which has developed a focussing issue. It sometimes will focus once when I switch the camera on & then stop focussing after that point. Other times it just will randomly start to work or stop working. It does the same on both my D610 & F5 bodies so is a lens problem. I sent it to Nikon for a repair estimate which is nearly 400 UK which will nearly double the price I paid for the lens second hand. This includes replacing the SWM & cleaning the glass, recalibrating, so should be functionally like new. I like this lens & it's image & build quality despite its weight & it will work with my F3, F5 & D610.

I guess I'm just after some opinions as to whether this is worth doing. Or any advice on where in the UK I might be able to get it repaired for less money. (Are Nikon really expensive for service).

Only you can decide if it is worth repairing.
If you replace it then at that sort of money you are looking at used lenses, what is to say you wont have the same problem with the next one you get. Unless you go down the sigma/tokina route.
My wife calls me a brand snob but I do prefer Nikon lenses over other makes.
Personally I would bite the bullet and get it fixed, I am currently looking at a 16-80 and will end up spending around the same amount of money for a decent used one.

Before you send it to Nikon, double check what their repair warranty is... Many people have sent their cameras/lenses to Nikon for repair only to have the same or similar issues after spending what is considered a lot of money.
