Looking recommendation for a lens that would be suitable for weddings christenings etc. The widest lens I currently have is s 50 mm Nikon or a 10 /20 mm sigma which it not fast enough…

Do you have a preference for a prime versus a zoom, or vice versa? Budget??

There's the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM A, which sells for about $500; not bad for an Art series prime and a great little prime.

A less expensive option would be the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G which sells for around $200.

I would consider either the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DX lens or the one of the 24-70mm f2.8 lens FX lenses if your pocket book can handle it and you can live with a D7100 wide angle of only 36mm.

I have a budget of around £350 think a zoom might be better for what I'm looking I shoot with the D500

I have a Tamron 28-75 2.8 that I use a lot. It does not have VC, but I have found it to be a good lens and B&H has it new for $399 US. I use it at church for Baptisms and such. It may be a bit long on the 500

For D500 body and indoor wedding event, i would suggest tokina 11-16 f2. 8. you would need wide angle for groups and a faster lens.

The 11-16mm would be good for getting environmental images, but the lens distortion may not be flattering when shooting people with that wide of a focal length. I would still recommend having something that wide for when you get into smaller rooms though.

true, there is no single lens to capture all occasions,. just what is most suitable and most importantly, capture the right moment.

There can be, more or less a single lens, but that pairs with the best body to compensate for everything else besides bokeh. And bokeh is 2.8 or primes.
