Ask yourself, what am I unhappy with my current lens selection? Is the IQ of the 24-85 significantly better than the 18-105? The answer to these questions should answer yours.

Well, it is definitely better for sharpness than the 18-105 but the 18-105 is a fine versatile lens for 12-16mpx sensors and I used mine with great effect on a D90 and even on a D7000 but its weaknesses in ultimate resolving power shows up on the D7100 and 7200. If it is a really good price the 24-85 would be a step up but still light and small and full frame image circle plus 1 ED lens. It was the kit lens on the Kit D600 I believe.
So whether to get it depends on value to you and what you shoot. It is a little long on the wide end on a Dx sensor camera but long enough on the long end to be a pretty decent portrait lenses. I would pass on it however if you have plans to get a wider range faster lens or mid primes which are going to perform better.

I'd say you don't need it, but could benefit from it... but I'd find it stupid to use FX glass on a DX body, since you're basically lugging around parts of glass that you're not using (you're only using the middle)...

Just my few cents.

I'm going to agree with Jip with one exception...are you planning to upgrade to FX at some point?

I used the D7100 as my transition body where I started replacing my glass with full frame lenses in order to be able to go D610 or D810 later. If you don't see the need to go full frame later on, then I would take advantage of the smaller DX packaging and keep it good. As others have said, you'll see a slight up tick in IQ with that 24-85 over the 18-105, but then the loss of reach and wide angle will have you carrying both...and the 18-105 will win out for simplicity.

There are a few reasons people use FX lenses on DX bodies, none of them are "stupid" as you describe.

One would be because lenses tend to be sharper in the middle and get softer on the edges. Since the DX sensor covers the middle part of the FX lens ,this would benefit the DX shooter as far as that goes.

Other reason would be, that some may want to upgrade to a FF camera in the future, so why buy lenses twice?

The exception would be for wide angle or ultra wide angle lenses where an FX glass wouldn't be wide enough for some DX shooter.
