Older D lenses

I was wondering how an older D lens works on something like a D7200. I shoot aperture mode mostly. The D lenses have the aperture adjustment on the lens. Does the camera still work in setting the aperture the same as a newer lens? I hope you all understand what I mean. It is hard to explain. Thanks

yes, there is an aperture ring lock on the D lens, once locked the aperture is controlled by the camera.

Locking the aperture ring is not a requirement to let the camera control the aperture. It merely prevents one from accidentally turning the ring off minimum aperture which would then cause the camera to not fire and display the fEE error message.

I've had both the 50mm 1.8D and the 85mm 1.8D with the D7100. They work well on current cameras and can be some great values over buying the latest G series lenses.

They do work, provided that you set your aperture on the lens to the minimum setting (largest number).

Right now, I have the 50mm f1.4 AF-D, 24mm f2.8 AF-D, and the 20mm f2.8 AF-D. All three are always in the bag, and I use them with all my cameras (D750, D500, F6, and FE2). They're great optically, although there are others out there who believe the 24 and 20 are soft on the edges. I never shoot them at less than f8, so I've not seen the "softness", and it's not an issue for me.
