My Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens has arrived.

Well, I'm such a dumbass sometimes. I took a sick day from work today (I knew my lens would arrive by the tracking) to test out my new (to me) lens.

Mounted it on my D500 (that is what camera I bought it for) and headed down to the Chattanooga Zoo to give it a good test run.

Mostly I wanted to test the lens how it would do wide open, and also with the Kenko 1.4TC essentially giving me a 420mm F/4 lens. (DX body 1.5 figured in )
Overall, I'm very happy with this lens. Wide open it is much sharper than my ex 80-200mm 2 ring lens was. Stopping down to f/4 or smaller I think that sharpness wise they are about the same. Color rendition wise, I think that the 80-200mm had somewhat richer colors. If not richer, maybe different.

Having said that, this is where the "dumbass" comment comes in. I shot everything in Jpeg. Why, you may ask did you shoot everything in Jpeg? Here is why.

I have 2 shooting banks set up on my D500. Bank-A is set up for normal Aperture priority everyday shooting situations, like landscapes or just a walkaround type of thing. I control the aperture and the ISO and camera picks shutter speed. If the Shutter speed gets low, I'll adjust the ISO myself. Beautiful!

Bank- B is set up for BIF. Manual mode with auto ISO. Minimum shutter speed at 1/1600th, maximum ISO 4000 and I control the aperture, normally wide open (5.6) on my 200-500mm lens. Also a very beautiful thing!

I decided to set up a third bank seeing it was an overcast day, plus there are a lot of shady areas at the zoo. I wanted to set it up just like bank -B, but with a lower 1/1000th minimum shutter speed on the auto ISO.
The one thing I forgot however, that on these cameras (unlike on the D750-7100 so on bodies) when I set up a user bank, I also have to specify image size, image quality and RAW type.
Make a short story long, I totally forgot about it and shot everything in JPEG which is the camera default

Oh well, live and learn.
here are few shots from the ZOO. I'll post a few more later as I process.

Well, I can say that I have done the same thing, only not on practice or test shots. An 'oh crap' moment for sure.
Nice jpeg series. ;)

Since Horoscope Fish was showing us the fantastic VR capabilities on his new Tammy G2, (which BTW seems totally awesome ) I decided to do a little VR testing myself.
Why let the Fish have all the fun?:)

Handheld with VR -ON in Active mode, at 1/25th of a second.
