Heads up on a nice lens kit for hiking

My recently acquired and AI'd 55 f/3.5 P.C has been spending a lot of time lately on my D7100 for shooting backyard critters. Today, I had a bit of an epiphany when I took it down to the neighborhood park with the fam. While I had my PK-13 and 200 f/4 Q.C in tow for extreme closeups and bird shots, turns out I never needed them. The 55 f/3.5 + modified TC-16A had me nicely covered from closeups of bees and flowers to portrait shots, making me wonder if it's a pretty close-to-ideal day hiking combo for me. It has some limitations, of course, with regard to low-light, wideangle and telephoto shots, but did remarkably well in the range it covers. A few sample shots below:

Seems quite versatile

In retrospect, a state-of-the-art long macro lens (85 f/3.5 or 105 f/4, or 3rd party offerings like the Tamron 90 f/2.8) may work even better in this scenario. I just don't happen to have such a lens to confirm as much.

Funny you shouldmention it. I have the Tamron 90mm and threw on the 1.4TC last night. Interesting indeed and I will be trying it out today.

Apologies for not being clear in my post. What I meant was a short tele macro could replace the 55 + TC combo altogether. However, a TC couldn't hurt you - you'd get some extra magnification at the macro end, and extra reach on the tele end in a pinch.

Good suggestion and nice photos. Thanks for sharing ... definitely something else to think about. (As if I didn't already have enough to think about.) :unconscious:
