Rokinon 14mm on Nikon D750

Went out this afternoon for a short walk around downtown just to push this new lens a little. There is only the correction automatically put in by Lightroom and a couple that I leveled the horizon a little. I wanted to see and show just what the lens could do with careful shooting. Overall I am pretty pleased. There are several of them since I wanted to show different situations. The only one that got cropped was the flowers and it is around 70% crop.

This is the only one where the lens distortion seems to get to me. The rest all look fantastic to me!

I did this one on purpose just to show what would happen if you shot it off level at all. The key to shooting any super wide lens is to keep it square to the subject and level.

For me there are times when I really like the perspective distortion when the lens is aimed up a little. This was taken with my Nikon 14mm.

I started using a plugin to correct a lot of the distortion like the wall both slanting to the middle that we see in a lot of wide angle shots. It is called DxO Viewpoint. It is worth the money if you shoot a wide angle a lot.

But I tilted the camera intentionally because I wanted this type of look! ;)

Cool shots Don buddy, and thank you for the tips! I no longer know what direction I'll be able to take with my photography, but those tip will be very handy if I can continue with the plans I had for a wide angle lens!:)

Nice shots!

Is the Rokinon replacing the Tokina or adding to the collection? Pros and cons of each?

Thanks,

Dennis

The Tokina 11-16 is a DX lens. It will work but only in Crop mode. Which I found is automatic on the D750. You put a DX lens on and the default is to go to the Crop mode on the camera. It you are going to do that then you might as well use the D7100 to shoot. Get more pixels that way.

The Rokinon is a FX lens so you really are shooting at 14mm instead of the 11mm on DX which is an equivalent of 16.5mm . I would not have thought there was that much difference in 14mm and 16.5mm but there is.

I do a lot of interior photos where I need the entire room in 1 shot. The 11-16 would do a pretty good job but the 14mm does it better. Also with the super wide lenses you don't have to worry about focusing the lens. Many of the areas I shoot there is not enough light to see what you are focusing on. I still like to shoot at ISO 100 so I carry a tripod and preset the lens on 7 feet or so and the aperture on f8 and everything from 2 feet to infinity is in focus. That is hard to beat. I think Long exposures tend to give you better color saturation anyway. May be in my head but that is what I tend to see.

That's just the factory setting. You can also set any FX body to shoot DX mode all the time, or FX mode all the time, regardless of the lens attached.

Correct. that is why I said the Default setting. I was quite surprised when I put my 11-16 on the camera and it looked great. I then noticed the file size was a lot lower. That is when I discovered the setting and what the default from Nikon was.
