So after much deliberation, posting, reading posts, reading reviews, etc. I finally made a trip to the camera store today. Talked to the sales associate and walked out with an early Christmas present; a Tamron SP 24-70 2.8 Di VC USD. Now I need to get the rebate form sent in and find some time for it and my D7000 to become acquainted.

Yes, I am deliberating about the same lens for my D7100. I want something very optically clear with low distortion. Please let me know how your lens does. Thanks! I hope it is a great lens!

Excellent lens... Love mine. It's the perfect compliment to a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD. :D

I also have the D7000 and think that I am going to get better glass before a new body. I have been saving up to get a new lens and this is on my short list.

Did you find or think you will find that you miss the wide end (17mm - 23mm) or are you using a different lens to cover that range?

That prospect was a consideration but in looking at photos I've taken, the most likely focal lengths were above that range. As a result, I felt the positives offered by the 24-70 2.8 outweighed any possible lost photos on the wider end. At some point I would like to consider a possible wider lens but that's definitely something that will have to wait quite a while. I can still put the 18-105 on for something wider if needed in the meantime.

Just wanted to give a short update on the lens. I haven't had much time at all to use (busy with work, etc.) but here are my initial impressions:
QUALITY: Feels good in the hand.
OPERATION: Working fine with my D7000
APPEARANCE: Looks big on the D7000 but I like it that way; makes the lens look even more impressive. :)
WEIGHT: Very manageable; probably would feel heavy on my neck if carrying around the entire day but I rarely do that with any lens.
IMAGE QUALITY: I've really just taken what I would call some testing pictures as I learn the abilities of the lens but so far the iq looks very good. Focus point seems to be where it should be. Will probably do a dot test at some point just to see what that produces in comparison with my other lenses.
APERTURE: Really like the constant aperture and the ability to use the 2.8; which I am still learning when playing with iso and shutter speed. Normally I use aperture priority but have been doing some manual at times.
FOCAL RANGE: I will admit that a little longer range would be nice but I still feel like this lens will meet the vast majority of my needs. Most likely if I need something longer, I will be a situation where the 70-300 will be on the camera anyway.

I'm looking forward to more time with the lens in the upcoming months.

I'll have to admit that my research is pointing me toward this lens as well versus the two Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 offerings. First of all, the Tamron is so much cheaper than the Nikons. Also, there seems to be very mixed reviews of the new Nikon 24-70 VR whereas the older version is still more expensive than the Tamron and without the VR, even though optically it seems to best even the VR version. HOWEVER, the Tamron also seems to be a mixed bag - a number of people seem to get a bad copy, and who knows how this number compares to the number of bad Nikon 24-70 VR copies. I guess all a guy can do is take the plunge and hope for a good copy of the Tamron!

Son many times I fell that it is not so much a bad copy of a lens but that the new owner has not taken the time to learn how to use the new lens or had expectations that are higher than they should be. Again, not every one of them but more than most would think.

True enough. I just looked at a number of photos of the Tamron on Flickr and see absolutely no reason why I would choose the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 VR over it. I've read that the difference in AF speed is negligible between the two, so the enormous cost savings of the Tamron still gives you a pretty remarkable lens.

I think there are a lot of the 3rd party camera accessories that are junk BUT more and more of them today are as good and sometime better than the name brand accessories. I think companies like Nikon, Canon try to live off their reputations some times, other companies that are not quite on that level like Olympus, Pentax have to watch it a little closer (Not saying they are not as good) companies like Sony are the new kids on the block and they can't afford to put out anything that is not at the top of their game. I just got my Rokinon 14mm lens. That same lens is out under many brands. It is not an expensive lens but stacks up pretty good against the big boys. Yongnuo is another example of a 3rd party accessory company that is doing a great business. Their flashes cost a third of what the same Nikon or Canon Speedlight would cost. From what I have found there is not that much difference in them.

Buy the Tamron and save the money for the next lens.

My Tammy 24-70 is my go to lens, especially for people pictures but the 24 is nice and wide for most landscapes.
No complaints - .... bought mine last May (well my wife bought it for me for my birthday) no rebate then :( .

Looking at the next one up, the Tammy 70-200 as my next lens, .... considering the older non VC version because it is almost half the price of the new one - but maybe I just wait longer.

I think the VC on the 24-70 has saved the shot more than once in my hands.

Hi there,

just have a technical question about Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD. I got the same lens couple months ago with slightly wobbling zoom barrel in vertical plane (horizontal is fine) which creates rattle when the lens is shaken. This is felt and visible most when the zoom barrel is a half-way out around 50mm focal length. Never noticed this mechanical imperfection affects final image optically though. Did you noticed anything like this on your Tamron?

I checked mine at 50mm and noticed this, also at 35 mm. HOWEVER, it is so slight that it is barely noticeable - in other words, I would never have looked for this unless you pointed it out! As for a rattle, I'm not sure if the one I'm hearing is in the lens or my D750, but I'm not concerned. My photos have been better than I expected with this lens.
