Nikon AF S ED VR Lens Question

So currently I have a D700 and I'm using my wife's 18-55 DX lens to do Real Estate photos. I've got someone selling a Nikon AF S ED VR lens form $175.oo. It's 2 months old and I"m just wondering if it would still give me as wide of a shot as I'm getting with the 18-55?

The maximum angle of view, which will be diagonally in your viewfinder, would increase from 76 to 84 degrees (bout 10%) when going from the 18-55 DX to a 24-85 FX lens.

That is based upon the tech data from the NikonUSA web site, and doesn't take into consideration that the image circle of the 18-55 may be larger than the DX format. I'd want to compare both before I took this to the bank, though.

I can't honestly answer that question for you. If the extra view angle will give you what you need, and the lens gives you the IQ that you need, it is up to you to decide.

I believe that there are several versions of this lens, and have no idea what each goes for when purchased used.

For me, the answer would be that I'm not looking for what this lens offers, so it isn't worth $175 to me. I'm sorry that I can't give you a better answer.

A little late to the party, but what the heck. The lens of which you speak is the same one that I use as my daily general purpose lens on my D800. In my opinion it is rather underrated. It is the full frame equivalent of the popular, versatile, and sharp DX 18-55mm lens and in my opinion should be in any FX format camera and lens kit Nikon offers.

I have yet to notice any serious shortcomings of this lens. The one I have sometimes autofocuses incorrectly, but usually it's right on the money.

It's a solid, versatile lens that gets more pictures taken through it than any other lens I own.

Sure, the F/4 24-120mm VR lens may be a better lens, but then again, it's substantially more expensive as well. Even used examples on ebay go for about three times what the 24-85 goes for.

Strange thing about the 24-120 f/4. Since it was released as a kit lens, the second hand market has been flooded with them, and the price has dropped significantly. The white boxed ones can easily be picked up for £400 now. It was more like £650 a couple of years ago. Some are asking for as much as £400 for the 24-85, tho it can be had cheaper

I'm in the USA and typically only search the US ebay site. 400 pounds (I don't even have that symbol on a US keyboard) puts it WAY over 400 dollars which is about all I'd be inclined to spend on that lens at this point in time.

I did have its slightly lower performing brother, 24-120mm F/3.5-5.6 VR, but I bought it for 75 dollars, cleaned the smudge off the front lens, and sold it for 140. It's not a well regarded lens but I saw the profit to be made off it so I went for it. I liked its zoom range. Very versatile.
