Hi
I have a d3200 with 18-55 zoom lens. The wife is buying me another lens. The question is do I go for the Nikon 55-200 or the tamron 18-200.. Both are similar prices

Have you looked at any reviews?

I have the Nikkor 55-200 lens.
Compared to the 70-300 VR: It is slow, soft. - But the 70-300 is somewhat more expensive then the 55-200.

What is the purpose of the lens?

I also suggest the Nikon 70-300 VR. Refurbed @ $350. Unless you're a casual shooter, in which case the Tammy superzoom will cover you almost everywhere. You can sell the 18-55 and buy a few beers! Good luck.

Agreed. It it's at all possible, this would be the route to take. The Nikon 70-300mm f/4 VR is pretty sweet.

I'd tell you to avoid the Nikon 55-300mm based on its paaaaainfully slow auto-focus.

The Tamron 18-200mm I don't really know much about, really, but I'm leery of zooms with focal ranges THAT wide.

I am having a similar dilemma, but between the Nikon 55-200 VRII or the Tamron 70-300, both around £250.

I like how compact the Nikon is, but would like the extra zoom range of the Tamron.

I've read several reviews on both, with varying opinions on both. My goal at some point is to find a store which stocks both these so I can do a direct comparison.

I am in the Uk and bought the 70-300 AFS Nikon for less than £300 sterling in May this year. Pretty happy with it, think it was a grey but UK supplied. Have heard good things about the Tamron SP equivalent as well,

If its the stabilizing version of the Tamron it a good lens and i would have it over the 55-200,if its the earlier version then no.

I'm going to buck the trend a little bit and suggest you get the Nikkor 55-300VR lens. It's my favorite DX lens and is a PERFECT pair-up with the 18-55VR. Just two lenses, full range from 18 to 300, fast focusing, clear, sharp, limited distortion, what's not to like? Particularly at the price. $220 factory refurbished from Nikon.
