New nikon 16-80 f2.8

I just noticed the pricing yeah. It's a bit expensive.

Yet it looked like a bargain after I checked the pricing of the other two. ;)

The 17-55 2.8 costs more than any DX body. And, many FX lenses cost more than the bodies (like the two announced with this DX model). Nice thing about good glass is that you don't have to upgrade it every 3-5 years and it tends to hold value (unlike bodies).

When I first saw this lens I thought it would be great to go with my 70-200mm 2.8. But after reading this thread I am getting the impression that I can do better. What lens would you guys recommend for the 70mm and lower range? I was thinking 24-70mm maybe...

Without regard for budget I'd suggest the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD, hands down. If you're willing to go grey you can get this lens for around $850.

Thanks Paul. I have had my eye on that lens for a few months now. I'm just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger.

It peaked my interest, until I saw the price, as I've been considering some possible future lens additions that would give a little more wide angle. I agree that if it was 2.8 only then it might be different. I could live with 2.8-4 but not for the price. Will be interesting to see some future images from this lens.

16mm at the wide range has me interested. The 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 that Nikon already produces is only a half to one f-stop slower, though, and it is a lot cheaper. I wonder how sharp the new lens will be, too.

I had that Sigma briefly and what irritates me is that the focus dial spins as the lens focus. Very 1990s. Sold it after 2 weeks.

When you consider it's the equivalent of the Fx 24-120 and 2.8 at the wider end the price is fair. f4 at 120 equivalent isn't too shabby, much better than the old 16-85 which I really liked. That 16mm point is very useful for a Dx semi-super zoom. I'd wait to judge for the IQ tests, could be a great pro-sumer grade lens. Finally Nikon is showing Dx some love! Now they need the mirrorless to match it up with!

That price though, $1,000 for a for a non fixed aperture DX lens. That is really hard to swallow.

Don't get me wrong, that's a good lens. Decent image quality and the OS worked well, but that plus no instant MF override, being a newer lens, compare to the older Nikon 16-85 is inexcusable to me.

Back to the new 16-80, I could live with f4 on the top end, but at that price and with a gold ring at the end of it, it better be good. I hope it will be weather sealed too, it will then be a decent "update" to the 17-55/2.8.

if it had a constant f2.8 and a 9 bladed aperture then yes.
looks like another overpriced mainly plastic offering from nikon.
the only other thing that would disappoint me further would be if it is made in china.
