Refurbished lenses for D3100 ?

I picked up my Cousins old D3100 body as he upgraded to a D7000 and I'm in need of a lens, looking to get a 18-55mm, really don't want to buy used and was thinking of refurbished, does anyone have any experience with refurbished lenses, and where I might look for one ?

Most good LCS will have those barely used in stock, my local shop always has a few and they guarantee them 90 days.....a lot of shooters trade them in for what they think will be better glass.....and probably get about $25.

They are also always on my local Craigslist for $50 to $100. I wouldn't worry too much about buying a used kit lens. Often on Craigslist here is the pair of kit lenses (18-55 and 55-100 ) super cheap....and both are very good pieces of camera kit.

(great lens btw both the VR and VR II)

I have bought refurbished lenses from Cameta on a couple of occasions and had great results. They look and act new.

You can also play with ANY lenses w/ the Nikon mount, new or old, albeit non-CPU chip ones will be all manual (but great for learning). Scout ebay for some primes or just something fun and affordable.

(your best friend if you find a trusted one that resells mint trade ins!!!)

Yes! I was fortunate to get two mint pre-owned lenses earlier last year...a Nikon 14mm f/2.8 and a Nikon 180mm f/2.8 from my local camera store. And the prices were extremely competitive, too!

It is always nice to score a good used lens. but starting out refurbished lenses are a better bated Cameta gives a better than average warranty.

If you have a local camera shop, call in, as they might have some camera lenses for sale, as other customers might have part exchanged there lenses.

also depending on where you live... maybe pawn shops can be a second route. Not all are so lucky to have LCS that sell both new and used... However there is the internet and you can search for used/refurbished lenses through Adorama, B&H, Cameta, KEH etc etc....

I know my now "Local" camera shop does not deal with used equipment. :(
