Don't curse me,,but I have a Canon lens question

Hi There Everybody-

First, let me set this thing right. I am a TOTAL Nikonite through and through and always will be, but my great friend thought of me when he was cleaning out his house and stumbled across a good amount of old Canon photography equipment (all manual lenses and a Canon AE-1 35 mm film body) and gave it all to me because he didn't want it anymore.

Which brings me here to all of you fine folks and friends, After I got home and was inspecting the equipment for condition and use, I noticed that on all 3 lenses he gave me, I couldn't get the aperture rings to go in and out by twisting the aperture rings on each lens.

So my question is, (for those of you that might know), are Canon manual lenses made so you can't move the aperture with the ring???

it's a 50mm 1.8 manual Canon, Thanks for taking the time to look it over.

P.s.,,just an FYI for you all as well,,,each of these lenses has fungus in each lens so basically they're shot, too bad though,, because the condition and focusing is in MINT condition.,,,I'm so glad that I'm a Nikonite !!, Thought you all might like to know that.

It's an SLR. The iris blades won't close until the shutter button is pressed on the body. The f/stop ring will set the f/stop for the shot. The body will use one of the levers on the back of the lens to stop down the blades to the f/stop you set on the ring. Try moving one of the levers on the back of the lens and see if they close.

Hi Joseph-

Thanks for the info. If you look in the photo of the back of the lens, see the small tab that has the longest area of travel. I can not get that tab to move or anything. I also placed it on the camera and moved the aperture ring while looking through the front of the lens and still nothing moved. But I will try to look down the front of the camera and see if the blades move. I'll let you know.

Thanks again !!!

Sincerely- Doug

Well,,I attched it to the canera and pressed the shutter down half way and nothing, so I'm pretty sure the blade/aperature workings are shot and don't work anymore.

Thanks again for all your tips and suggestions. I think I'm going to play with it and take it apart and see how well these were built back in the day.

Sincerely- Doug

Probably the only thing it's good for, Doug. Sounds like it's been in moisture, possibly dropped and damage. Fungus can't be good. :(
