What lens do I need now.

I presently have the:
D7100
Nikon 18-140 Zoom
Nikon 55-200
Nikon 40mm Macro

I like all three of these lenses but I want a little more reach than the 200 offers. I would like to go to 300 with a zoom. Without going overboard on your suggestions what are some of the options I have. Does not have to be be Nikon brand. Want at least as good of quality as the 55-200 I have now. Do not suggest lenses that cost a bundle of money. I want affordable lenses.

Nikon 70-300 VR would be my choice, sell your 55-200.

Edit- not only will the 70-300 give you extra reach, but its a nice increase in IQ from the 55-200.

Tamron 70-300 Di VC and some extreme wide angle, either zoom (like 11-16mm http://goo.gl/vVG1T) or a 14mm/15mm prime.

Along with the others, I agree, I think the Tamron 70-300 VC is an excellent value and pretty much matches the Nikon. You definitely need something wide too :)

I just ordered the [h=1]Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR[/h]
I think it will do what I want. I am going to the Okefenokee Swamp later this month for a private guided tour and wanted something with a little more reach. Also in my zoo shots I have not been able to get the close up that I want.

Don,

Good choice. And you get a little extra reach with the dx crop function on the D7100. Came in handy for the Airshow last summer.

I was going to suggest to save up for the newer version of the 80-400mm zoom lens.

i looked at the crop mode but decided that it is just as good to use the standard mode and crop it in post. That is what I did with this photo

Great shot. Where did you get that. Been planning to hit miss river here for an eagle. Never seen one.

I thought the D7100 was already a DX crop camera?

It is a crop camera but it also has a setting the gives it another 1.3 crop to extend the reach and give it the same MP of the D7000. It just shows a box in the viewfinder. Like I said I had just as soon crop it in post and have better control. It amounts to the exact same thing in the end. If you were shooting JPEG and going straight to print then I could see using it. With 24 MP you do have some room to play.

Interesting. I did not know this about the D7100. I wonder why Nikon did that? As you said post shot cropping makes more sense.
