I got a raise! Now I'm getting NAS again!

So I fell into a (small) raise, and a 700$ bonus today at work. Pretty sweet!

It came at a good time too, since I've been thinking about FF and the 24-70 a LOT recently.

I currently have a D7000, 16-85 and a 50 1.4 (which I'd like to keep for when I have a FF camera). Thinking about selling the D7K and the 16-85 to fund either a D610 or a 24-70. I just don't know which I want first.
I know, glass is always a better investment. But it seems kind of pointless without reaping full advantage of the field of view that lens would offer me. Not to mention the better field of view the 50 would offer.

Such is my dilemma.

I've also been looking at that Tamron 24-70 and while the price is really nice, I don't know if It'd be always in the back of my mind that I should have gone first party with it and just cried once, you know? Obviously I'm not Mr. Moneybags here, but I do think that a 24-70 and a fast prime could get someone through just about any situation they would encounter.

Blech. I guess this post is kind of a rant, but it's secretly asking for 'nudges' in a direction :p

Re: I got a raise! Now I'm getting GAS again!

Consider used items such as the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 in order to save some hard earned income.

Take a look at KEH.com you may be able to save some money. I've sold & bought from them they're a reputable company.

Since you have the 16-85..I would hold off on the 24-70mm 2.8 Im about to sell my 28mm 1.8g and get the 24-70mm 2.8 thou..But the 28mm is my widest at this point. So for me the glass is the obvious choice..I have the D7100 and goin to wait till the 6xx line upgrades their Focus system, removes aa filter and raises maxium shutter to 1/8000..

...HOW did I not know about KEH.com?! :D

I did find a local lens for about 1450 that I was interested in also.. What's a going rate for a decent used copy these days anyway?

^Agreed. I'm a bit miffed at the AF point distribution and the shutter speed. AND the aa filter. But realistically, they'll likely upgrade the 6xx line in what, 5 years? I can't wait that long.

When I went Fx, I started with only the 50 1.8g first and worked with it. It's a difficult call, I'll buck the trend and go for the D610. That along with a 50 1.4 is a great combo. But it depends if you can wait for the next lens and how long will that be.

<$1,500 is a fair price for that lens.

It seems like what you really would like is a D800E and a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. Something has to give, so I would suggest to go with the lens first. Maybe on your second raise, you might be able to afford the D800E whenever that time comes.

get the 610 first. That with 50mm is a good combination. It will also force you to make proper framing and zoom with your legs.

I did change the title of this thread because I thought the GAS title was a typo. If not, I can change it back to GAS even if I don't see what it could mean.

I was in the same boat, had a few FX lenses and wanted a new 70-200 2.8. I decided to hold off and upgraded form the 7k to the 600 and haven't looked back. You can find some great deals on lenses out there but you just have to be ready to buy them.

^HAH! I did mean GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) in fact and it was a little play on words there..\

For certain, I would LIKE a D800E, but I mean, I really can't justify the price and the file sizes really. I just think it's too much camera for what I need a camera to do. All that's really missing for me is the field of view and lower noise floor. So, that makes me want to shoot for the lowest priced FF camera available. Lenses are really where the magic happens.

I agree that the d610 + 50 1.4 would be amazing. I've thought about that route as well and doing lenses later. Honestly 24-70 on a crop sensor seems like an awkward range anyway..

Sorry, I thought you meant Nikon Acquisition Syndrome. Do you want me to change it back?

The unthinkable has happened. I lost my job! WTF?!

So after getting a great performance review and a raise, they let me go stating that they are 'restructuring' the department. Wow. Such amaze. So, now, I'm officially fed up with Northern Virginia and DC and am planning to move to Raleigh, NC in the next few months. I'm pretty livid at the transience of the area and the seemingly non-stable job market here. Companies don't seem eager to nurture employees and are quick to let them go for any reason.

In addition....no new camera or lenses for the time being. :(
