I shoot with a d40 and am aware that with this lense there is no autofocus. i always shoot in manual and have read the manual for the fixed lense but something is not right about my images. they are coming out overexposed. I was told you are to keep the aperture ring set to the larger fstop# and to change the aperture in the camera body. so , where did i go wrong? Should i shoot in Aperture setting?

You might check in your camera manual. I know when I use a D AF lens on my D200, I have to set the aperature to the smallest aperature/setting (which is the largest number e.g. f/22) The camera will then take care of the exposure. Chances are it's the same for your camera --if you have the lens opening on f/1.8, the camera is not reading any exposure info, and hence, everything is shot at wide open and overexposed.

Hope this helps.

In your camera menu, look for something called "Non CPU Lens Data" or something similar. You may have to go in there and set the parameters of the particular lens you're using. Hope this helps.
