Odd Distortion in 18-55mm “Kit Lens” on D3200 — Is This Normal?

Nikon D3200, with the stock 18-55mm ƒ3.5-5.6 “kit lens”.

A short time ago, I took this picture of a dandelion seed head. I was rather alarmed to see the way it came out distorted.

CSC_4977.jpg

I was able to fix it in PhotoShop:

Dandelion_20131025_145746.jpg

A few attempts, just now, to reproduce this distortion by taking a few other pictures at similar range were not successful. It seems like something odd and irreproducible that happened just on this one occasion.

Is there anything useful or otherwise interesting that anyone can tell me about this? Is there any normal, credible or why it would only do so explanation as to why this lens would ever produce this sort of distortion? Why only this once, and not when I later try to reproduce the effect? Is there any reason to fear that this might indicate something wrong with my lens or my camera?

How might I be able to reproduce this effect?

How might I be able to prevent it?

It occurs to me now, that if the dandelion were in very rapid motion, this is the sort of distortion that a focal plane shutter would produce via the “rolling shutter” effect. But the dandelion was not in such motion. I was in a rather unstable position when I took this picture, so I might not have been holding the camera quite as solidly still as I would like. Is it plausible that this is a result of ordinary camera shake? The shutter speed was 1/500 of a second.

No answer after sixteen hours?

I may have figured it out myself, anyway. Though I still haven't been able to reproduce it, I think I must have somehow jerked the camera while the picture was being taken, such that the rolling shutter effect caused this distortion.

The shutter moves vertically in the D3200, right? Does it move upward or downward? Anyone know?

Looking through your data I don't see the speed. What was your speed and did you shoot hand held?? If you had a low speed set you will get a blurred picture.

Hard to say, but it looks like camera shake to me. If it doesn't happen again I'd let it go. I've had accidental shots too that where something went totally haywire for just that one shot. Sometimes it was quite nice what turned out.

So I don't know... It's an imperfect world we live in.

Yes, we have lives. Just saw the post tonight after work. Don't get on as much.

Lens distortion is often enhanced by the angle of the shot. Flowers are very easy to distort because of the circular nature. Coming in close at an angle will create more extreme distortion. Had you been perpendicular to the head of the flower, lens elements parallel to the flower, at the same height, you probably would not notice any distortion unless it is actually due to motion.

It's there, right near the top of the block. I also explicitly stated it. 1/500 of a second.

It's a dandelion. When dandelions go to seed, the resulting seed head is spherical in shape. It would have looked round from any angle.

Sorry thats what happens when I try to speed read and not wear my glasses. It does look like some kind of barrel distortion did happen. Especially when you couldn't produce the same effect again.
