Hi All,

First post here.
A recent trip to South Africa finally killed off my D80 and my Sigma 70–300mm f/4–5.6 APO DG Macro lens. Last month's wages replaced the body with a shiny new D5200. This month I'm looking to replace the lens.

Now don't laugh but the Sigma is almost everything I need from a lens. I almost exclusively photograph dragonflies and damselflies and this lens allows me to take 1:2 macro from a sensible range (about a metre) and, with the addition of an extension tube or macro filter, much higher magnifications if I can get in closer. The only (dragon)flies in the ointment are the lack of image stabilisation and fast auto focus.

Can anyone recommend a lens that could compete with the sigma for macro and focal length but would bring me into the 21st century?

Tim Hanson.

Well, it isn't actual macro that it offers, so only better solutions I can think of is an actual macro prime and a faster ~300 zoom.
