Depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers. Nikon would be the best investment. I have a Sigma 105 macro that I absolutely love. Is it better than the Nikon? I wouldn't bet on it but it works fine for my use. I also have a very small and light Tamron 28-200. It's my choice for traveling. It's not perfect, but it is so small that it doesn't attract attention and so light that I don't mind taking it with me all day.

What I've read is that with third party lenses you can have more quality variations than the Nikon. But you can also save money except if you are a never satisfied person that wants always the best. Then there are good chances that you'll end up selling the third party lenses to get the Nikons expensive pro zooms. And IQ wise, they are worth every penny.

Enjoy lens shopping.

It depends on the lens. Some Sigma's are better than Tamron and vice versa. And some Sigmas are better than Nikon etc. I have a couple of Sigmas because they are highly rated and offer me things that Nikon's current offerings do not. I'm using the 17-50 2.8 for DX because it has VR where as Nikon's 17-55 does not. I also have the 150 2.8 Macro. So far I'm thrilled with both. The Macro is especially fine. I bought it because it came highly recommended and gives me more working distance than the Nikon 105.
I'm not familiar with the Tamrons but the Sigma DGs are for FX and their DCs are for the DX.

As was stated, it's a lens by lens variation. I have several Sigma lenses that I like a lot, and never owned a Tamron. Both companies have made a good living on quality DX lenses and are only just making some waves in full frame. I'd take a hard look at either and see what Nikon offers in the same spot for your D600. That full frame sensor deserves the best glass you can throw on it, so don't short change yourself.

I agree with everyone else. Nikon is a safe bet usually, but it pays to look at the third party offerings individually. No one brand does it all.

I own a D600 and just purchased a Sigma- 24-70 F2.8 IF EX DG today. The lens is fantastic! I can see how it will become my go to walk around lens. I looked at the Nikon but it was twice the price and the specs were remarkably similar in both lenses. Nikon: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Autofocus Lens (Black) 2164 Sigma: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon 571306 I like Nikon branded stuff but the price on the Nikkor was outside my budget. So was the Sigma but at least it was do able. I have a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5 that I love but it is DX and I use it on my D7000 Love it as well and besides for some primes 35 and 50mm Nikon F/1.8 Again super cool as a walk around as it will cover a lot of bases. The difference in quality is far less than the difference in price over a Nikon lens.

I have that Sigma, it's a good lens but when compared to the Nikon 24-70 it looses a lot at f/2.8 and distortion is more visible. However, comparing prices, the Sigma is good value for money.

I have the new Tamron 24-70 with VC and I love it. It rated one point higher than Nikon in DXO's test.

I own the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 and it takes wonderful photos. It doesn't have any type of image stabilization (neither does the Nikon, does it?), but the Tamron supposedly does have it. The Sigma's price and quality was the reason I bought it. I don't think I'd consider the Tamron, because for that price, I'd prefer to opt for the additional $ and splurge for the Nikon.
