If that's the same G-series as I got with my D600 it's a wonderful lens. As for the warranty, I do believe they may ask you for a receipt as proof of purchase should you need service. If it was in a gold box then it wasn't one of the kit lenses, which were all packed in white boxes inside the D600 kit box, and I've seen quite a few of those popping up here and there when the kits dipped under $2K at Christmas. Either way it's a great score.

I did a fair amount of research and I am pleased with what I read. I'm not really concerned about the warranty. For $227, warrant-less would have been fine. The warranty card and info just happened to still be in the box.
