D700 Issues

My D700 will not let me format a card or update the firmware. When I try to use the functions the 'Yes' to proceed is highlighted in Red and will not function. Has anyone else had these problems? I can take a picture, but , who knows if the camera is really functioning correctly. I can delete pics on the card one at a time. Also the picture bracket is grayed out. It's almost like it is dying a slow death, it should be no where near that. Thanks...Leatha

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!!!

When you take pictures with the camera, are the images saved to the card? Is there anything else on the card that might be protected and keeping the camera from formatting it?

Yes they are saved to the card. I have never protected any of the cards. I just pulled out the third card, took a pic and tried to format with the same result. It will not let me choose 'yes' to continue the format.

Ah, you have to press the OK button that is at the bottom row of buttons on the left of the screen. The middle button of the muti funcion is not the one to OK the format.

The format is working, but, when I try to update the firmware, it isn't seeing the software. Not sure it even needs it. I think it was a lens update.

If it ain't broken, don't bother trying to fix it. Enjoy your D700. I really loved mine and have a bit of regret selling it. But the 810 is no slouch so I can't complain.

Welcome to the forum Leatha. I do love my D700. Glad to hear that your issue was easily resolved. I have a few of those situations where the problem is a short between the camera and the floor or chair. They are much less expensive to fix :)

When doing a firmware update... be sure the BIN file is in the "root" directory of your memory card, and NOT in a subfolder... Nikon's website method tends to put the BIN file in a subfolder... If it's in a subfolder, your camera won't see it...

I'm one of those who think if something isn't broken, it doesn't need fixing. :shame: In all honesty, I've never updated firmware on any of my cameras and haven't experienced any issues for not doing so. When I sent my D600 to Nikon for the oil spot issue, they updated the firmware even though it wasn't something I requested. If the firmware contains a vital fix that would help me, then of course I would consider it.

Hope the suggestions by the other members help you!
