Nikon's First Half Financials

There have been discussions on line about Nikon's "problems" and the potential for another company to buy into the Nikon business.

The Japanese business community is very much culture supporting and have intimated that they would only allow another Japanese company to buy into Nikon (Fuji has been rumoured to be showing an interest).

There is an interesting sentence in the report that is very relevant and endorses what is muted on line and in many forums "Nikon is in a market share slide that's unprecedented in modern camera manufacturing history".

The rapid rise and development of mirrorless cameras is certainly having an impact on the big boys and cameras such as the Sony A9 are encouraging the shift. There are an increasing number of Pro's using mirrorless for their day to day work due to size / weight and results so Nikon needs to live up to its hinted at intentions and deliver a quality semi-pro / professional mirrorless unit with a suitable assortment of lenses or suffer the consequences by ongoing loss of market share.

The "problems" seem to be reflected here in the UK with fewer if any sales reps (heard this from a retailer who said there are no longer any Nikon sales reps who visit retailers) and a recent experience with spares / repair that required me to get in touch with the UK MD for a resolution does indicate an issue!

I worked as a Pro for 20+yrs (11yrs for US Government in West Berlin and 9yrs back here in UK) and used to attend "Foto-Kino" in Cologne every two years where you could meet with Nikon reps who visited retailers to demonstrate / attend Nikon days and promote equipment. I personally remember discussions with Mr Tanaka who I dealt with and was always helpful - this was another reason we used Nikon exclusively as our 35mm units.

Fingers crossed Nikon can come through their issues and the current range of cameras can help pull back their market share.
