Coolpix P900 vs D300S

Presently I have an old D70 and a D300S with several lens. For future trips I want to reduce the number of equipment and wanted to purchase a more compact camera.
Following a visit at a local camera shop to view the P900, the salesman kind of scared me off in terms of photo quality I would get out of the P900.
Long introduction to ask what would be the difference of a photo taken with my D300S with my 27-70mm F2.8 and the same photo with the P900. Considering same lighting and same conditions. How much to I lose with the Coolpix P900.
I am not questioning the zoom aspect of the P900. What can I expect in quality of photos?
Thanks for any info on this.

There is a VERY thorough review on Photography Life that includes many, many photos taken with the P900.

I suggest you read it from start to finish: Photography Life Reviews the P900

I'm not as familiar with the P900, but the link that HF posted looks like an excellent resource.

Let us know what you decide to do and what influences that decision, please!

Its a none comparison really, the P900 with all its shortcomings against DX has its strengths but ime not sure they would show for you on a trip away.
The more sensible alternatives to your DX set up if you want an all in one answer would be a camera with a 1 inch sensor, now we get to the part that Nikon dont make any thing at the moment,i would suggest you look at something like a Panasonic FZ1000.
Its not a lot more money than a P900 and would be streets ahead of the P900 for what i think your talking about, lets be clear i do not have a down on small sensor bridge cameras i have owned the P900 and may do again, one downside to the P900 is it does not shoot raw.

some of those numerical comparisons emphasize the 900's optical stabilization which the 300 does not have...

not fair, get a VR lens for the 300
