wedding photography suggestions

Hi all,

It's my sister's wedding coming up and I wanted a few nice personal family shots but don’t have a good quality camera. Was looking at renting one off Fat Lama, but I didn't know which one to get. I was settled on the Nikon ones. Theres a few D3200/D3300 and D5100s. What is going to be the best one for a wedding? Photos are going to be medium range, natural lighting (as its outside). Lens aside, what are the main differences - which one would I feel most comfortable with?

Feedback would be much appreciated.

Cheers, James.

The D3300 should do what you need it to do and it is easy to use. Get a 18-105 or 18-140 lens with it if you can. It was give you a little more flexibility in shooting. I hope there will be a professional photographer doing the actual wedding photos? You really don't want that responsibility.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.

I agree with Don, I hope you aren't planning to be the official wedding photographer. If so, it would be like thinking you can jump out of a 1970's VW Beetle and into a Indy car at the Indy 500 :shame:. Also, if you have never used a good camera before, you may actually get better pictures out of your non good quality camera.

Actually in good natural light a good cell phone will give excellent images, good enough for A4 prints.

In case you are bent on using a DSLR, I would suggest that you rent a D3300 at least a week before and practice till the wedding. Alternatively you can buy a D3300 with a kit lens and a 35mm F1.8DX. The 35mm lens with D3300 is good enough for interior shots in decent light and the kit lens will give you wide shots outside. Here are a few shots with D3300 and 35mm lens taken recently
