HA!!! I'm the guy two weeks ago with the first time DSL buyer question, D5200, D5300, D5500, D7100, D7200, Blah Blah BLah! SO I was sold on the D7200, that's it. gotta have it, going to get it.

So I was leaning paying a tad more & buying it here in town, support the local business, etc... I went into browse last weekend just to check out the shop. Told the sales guy my story & what my needs were. He brought out the D5500 & D7100 to check out. Wow!! The the D5500 felt so much lighter, better, easier to toss around. For my activities, I see this compact body being more functional with the same quality pictures.

SO... D5300 or D5500? Money is not an issue. But if there is not much difference... I went on DP preview. Looks like the D5500 has the touch screen & longer battery life. The D5300 has a built in GPS. Both have built in WIFI.

Again my use; sailing, motocross, travel, minimal video. Probably buying the body & a 18-200 lens.

Thoughts?

Firstly, I am a newbie to dslr and hadn't picked up a camera in about 20 years. Everything prior was 35mm film mostly family events. So there won't be any comparisons to other cameras.

I purchased the D5500 based on weight and the expeed 4 processor. Honestly I had no intention of using the touch screen. It has turned out to be an awesome feature. Dabbling in astroshots, the articulation comes in very handy for focusing and the touch screen reacts with an extremely light touch. Touching the screen with just a wisp for shutter activation eliminates the need for wireless remote. In live view mode, wherever you touch the screen is where the camera will focus. Have yet to be comfortable using the screen for composition as the viewfinder suits me, but do see that the articulating screen might be good when shooting macro or any tripod work.

The D5500 fitted with an 18-55 or 55-200 is like walking around with a ham sandwich. Those new Nikor VR II's are very light and make for an easy to handle rig.

I suspect that touch screen would irritate the crap out of me each time I held it to me face and my face started changing things. That and I hate how dirty my touch computer screen gets so quickly.

There is a lever behind the shutter button to switch between live view and view finder modes. In live view, on the touch screen, the triangle settings and storage capacity (how many shots will fit) is shown. When switching to viewfinder mode, the screen momentarily displays the triangle settings and 14 more camera settings. In the viewfinder there is the typical settings display across the bottom. There is no analog display on top of the camera. From day one there has been a screen protector on this unit. Vello is the brand and it is 0.02" optical glass with friction adhesion. Micro fiber cleans it in a jiffy.

I'm looking at the D5*00 and would have to say the D5200 and D5300 feel great ie solid with decent quality feeling buttons. the D5500 immediately felt cheap by comparison. I know it's a good camera but all plastic and the mode selector wheels were cheap feeling and not the Nikon click of the older cameras. Sad but true.
