This is my first post in nikonites and starting with a question. I presently have a D300s and my old D70. What is the major difference in using a Full frame vs these two cameras. I am considering selling these and move to only one camera. Is worth the changes?
Thanks for your help

I can't speak about those two cams but I recently switched from the D3300 crop sensor to the D750 full frame. They're both 24Mpix and of about the same technological generation yet very different at some levels.

The major difference for me is the quality increase of my lenses. Many of them were for both formats but not until I used them on the D750, I noticed how well some perform. Besides that there is the noise performance. Full frame tends to do better there. And of course there are a whole lot of buttons and options which some crop models lack.

But most of all I notice a much better lens performance.

For me the change was worth every penny and now there's no going back to crop.

FX is usually better with low light / high ISO.

You'll need FX glass to make use of the entire sensor. If you only have DX lenses, you'll need to start buying more lenses.

FX bodies have more tech features.

FX bodies are larger & heavier.

Is it worth it? We can't answer that.

Welcome to the forum,if you give us an idea of the subjects you take it would be better,i mainly shoot birds and struggle most of the time to fill a crop sensor so to me FF would be a waste.

Well. ... let me say this.... fx is as good as dx. Fx lenses on Nikon bodies are way heavier and bulkier. I bought a Sony because it 's smaller and lighter. I personally like to shoot cars and wide angle images. Fx and dx are used for a variety of reasons. What do you like too shoot?

Has anyone gone from DX to FX and then wish they hadn't?

Anyone EVER?

*CUE THE TUMBLEWEED!*
.....

Let's just say that I switched to FX but came back to embrace DX as a part of my overall kit after trying to go without it for almost a year. 50% more reach can get pretty expensive when you try and do it all with glass.

For folks new to this idea, Nasim has covered it before but has just published a new blog on crop factors and what they really mean for the photographer. Worth the read if you still have any questions on it.

Keep the D300s and add a D700.

My kit is perfection for me.....cameras handle the same I often shoot with both - the extra reach on the D300 is fun! I planned this kit from day 1 switching from 30+ years of A mount.

Could not be happier!! LOVE, LOVE!! My planning was spot on!!! Super happy (can you tell?)

( hunting a D300s to replace the D300 at the right price, and wishing the D400 had happened!!!)

WELCOME!

Being somewhat of a D300 fanatic.....why on earth would you want to get rid of your D300s?? Does it not take good photos for you? Do you not have DX lenses to shoot with? You prefer to spend more money on FX lenses?

Seriously....if I took a picture with a D300 and the same picture with a D700....do you think you could tell the difference? Without access to the EXIF, I seriously doubt it. Main difference? The DX sensor is smaller than the FX sensor.

Having an FX camera does not make you a better photographer...same as having a Ferrari does not make you a better driver!

Making a living shooting with your camera?...sure, go for the FX. Why not. Money's no object, right? You're a hobbyist?...then what's wrong with your D300s? Nothing, right?

Some would disagree with me on the points I just made, but.........I urge you to give it some thought.

Here are two shots, one with the D3300, one with the D750. I tried to get the same FoV which isn't that easy I discovered. Focused with zoom in live. Same lens, same lightning, same Mpix, only adjusted to the same exposure. Exif is identical for all.

This is about the difference you can expect between newer generation crop and full. It's up to you how much money you want to spend on what. If you know what to look for, it's not hard to see which is which.

If these 4 photos were taken with both the D750 and the D3300, then why does your EXIF indicate all 4 photos are taken with the D3300?

Because I didn't want the EXIF to influence anything and copied the D750 into the D3300 layer to avoid that and get the same dimensions. The D750 got a whopping 16pix more. ;)

I have FX but really would like a DX for the reach and the increased macro detail that is possible.
Never satisfied.

If you have DX don't replace it just add FX as well.
