D9300 to be the D300s replacement? (D400)

Still the rumor of the D7200 this Summer, too... and the D7xxx line has been thrown around as the "flagship" of the DX line for quite some time. Is there REALLY an urgent need for something between the D7xxx and the D610? Nikon... well, the whole tech marketplace, confuses me sometimes.

Granted, I'm a n00b still, but can someone enlighten me as to what a model above the D7xxx line would add to a DX body that wouldn't warrant the small amount of money to go on up to an FX? I could see maybe an increased buffer, or a bit more FPS, but couldn't they just put that in the D7200? I guess it's a way to eke out that extra couple hundred bucks?

Don't get me wrong. I'll probably still want one... I just want to know why. :p

Pro-level, actual weather sealing unlike simple weather resistance. Few more sockets. Really, 7000 vs 300.

Well our house was really big fans of the 300/300s. We waited and waited and waited for the D400. We now have two D7100 and one D800 body. I've now convinced myself that they meet my needs so Nikon will not be getting our cash for some time to come. I am definitely the limiting factor for most things these days so I will upgrade when the camera is holding me back again, which the D300 was to some extent.

The funny thing is that Nikon could have had 2 x £1300 from us for the D400, but forced us to spend £1600 on the two D7100 bodies with the discounts.

Means they are putting some cash into the DX-Line tho, can we expect some new DX lenses too perhaps? It will anyhow be to expensive for my budget/skill ratio :) Still drooling over the D610 and wondering how I'll convince the misses that I "need" it :p

Don't confuse FX as always better than DX. The DX bodies are much closer in image quality these days including high ISO. I'm not saying there is not a gap but it's much smaller than when the D300 and D700 where the DX and FX advanced amateur bodies.

Both formats have their place. Yesterday I left home with the D7100 in preference to my D800 because I wanted to pot a few birds. The resolution for that application is better because I can only fill a DX frame size anyway.the same often applies for macro shots. It also has higher frames per second, albeit the buffer is smaller.

The D9300 or whatever it's called will probably do 8-10 fps with a good buffer for raw. It will be a better build quality, albeit the D7100 is pretty good. The AF will probably be the same as the D7100 was a step up from the D7000 at 51 points. As for other features between the body types they don't cause me an issue.

This is extremely exciting news especially if Nikon adds some new DX glass. If this had come out a couple months ago I may not have moved from the D300 to the D800. (Who am I kidding, I'm loving the D800.) I hope it has the professional controls and footprint which will make the D300 users drool. Can't wait to see what the future holds!

I sure wish they had more info on it! It sounds like it might be a great future upgrade for me, once I could come up with the price, when it's been around for awhile! I love the D300, so this sounds like great news! Maybe I won't want to go full frame if the new Nikon turns out great! :D
But you never know I guess! Lol :D

Price speculation, could a pro Dx out price the entry level Fx? I don't think Nikon will do that. I'll put it at $1699 (us), a $500 premium over the D7100.

Bill...I have the D610 and D7100... Go FX and don't look back....The pro-dx will probably be so close in price to the D610 that it would only make sense to skip it and go fx...

The D7100 satisfies as a pro-dx in my book...The price will be higher then the d7100.. So FX would be the better choice in this situation..Like I said before, nikon should concentrate on more glass instead of this non-sense..135mm 1.8 or F/2 etc...Nikon people are keeping an eye on Sigma so Nikon should get the hint already..

If they put the price in the "gap" between d7100 and d610 I kinda wonder how that will affect the rest of the dx series...less upgrades for the d7x00, d5x00 and d3x00 series to make sure the d9x00 always has an edge? Or perhaps an equal relative drop in price(over time) for these models to have a wider market then they already have? One thing is for sure tho, only time will tell :)

There are a lot of wildlife shooters that want a pro Dx for the crop factor. We're talking pro weather sealing and superior shutter speed/buffer, all elements that the D7100 does not have. Basically a Dx D4s perhaps? But this could be yet another false rumor.

Seems a little close to April 1st. And D9300? Why not D300x or just D310? I dunno...just seems odd.
