Nikon D40 vs Olympus OMD E5/ Nex 7 (lol!)

Hi Everyone. I am a proud owner of a D40, which I bought 5 years ago. I loved it when I first got it but then my interest in it waned over the years until recently my friend let me borrow his 300mm fixed lens-- I am in love with photography again!!

Anyways, I am trying to figure out if I should start buying these new lenses (either a 55-200mm or 70-300mm) to start exploring more forms of photography; or, I was thinking about buying a new camera to start fresh with these new lenses. Specifically I am interested in these new EVIL cameras that Sony and Olympus put out. I just like compactness.

I know the price is definitely an issue. But my questions to everyone are:
1) Should I start buying lenses for a camera that might kick the bucket in a couple years (months?). I know also that Nikon will always be producing cameras, so I couldn't go wrong. But I am very interested in those tiny little cameras by Sony etc. In which case, my other question is:
2) Will Nikon be coming out with a camera that will compete with the Nex 7 or OMD-E5 sometime soon?

If the answer for no (2) is yes, then itll make (1) irrelevant. But if the answer is either no or unsure, then I have to think if its worth buying a lenses for a camera that may die, and then I am locked into Nikons that are a little bulky for my taste...

and yes, I know this post makes me seem like im not a true nikonite!

As far as i know, the closest thing that Nikon has, is the Nikon 1. Not sure that they will go beyond that and make somemthing that is comparable to the Nex 7. Seriously, if you really love those types of cameras, don't wait for Nikon to come out with something.

I have a Nikon 1 V1 and have owned a PEN camera. They are pretty amazing as long as you understand the limitations. That being said, the OM-D E-M5 is very appealing to me. If you are interested, Thom Hogan posted an amazingly detailed review on his SansMirror site and PCMag also reviewed it.
