Coolpix A and film styles in Picture Control

Earlier this week I saw a facebook post linking to an article on SLRLounge from March 30th

https://www.slrlounge.com/shoot-film-styles-on-nikon-how-to/

This shows how to download old film types and import them to your 'Picture Controls' on your late model Nikon camera.

I tried this on the D40, but it isn't compatible. I installed a few on my D7100 and thought about my Coolpix A. I use this little pocket camera as a daily carry in my work bag, what a great combination! I've imported the Kodak Portra 160 and Kodak Kodachrome 'presets' so far.

This gives a film-type look right out of the camera, no need to do this in LR, etc.

It seems to be a bit 'controversial' online, but I find them useful and plan to use them from time to time myself.

I've shared a sample below, pulled right off the SD card on the Coolpix A today SOOC

Thoughts?

Could you elaborate on what, exactly, the controversy is? Because I'm really having a hard time figuring out that would look like. Is it something along the lines of how you're a big, fat cheater because you didn't use ACTUAL film to achieve the effect? If so, I'll happily tell you I find that entire train of reasoning stupid, and would dismiss those arguments with a dramatic and dismissive wave of my hand.

*waves hand dismissively for dramatic effect*

Put simply, I'm not all that interested in how someone gets to where they got with an outstanding image; unless it's to learn a process or technique.

For me, the proof of the proverbial pudding is in the eating and in photographic terms that means the final image speaks for itself.

This was originally shared this week on a Film photography facebook group. The narrow minded component of that community soon took over and it became a bitch fest LOL

Digital is bad, why bother, why bother using a D300, blah blah blah. A bunch of narrow minded old men and women took it to the extreme. I've since removed myself from that toxic group :)

Oh... Yeah. One of THOSE groups. *cough*

Glad you moved on.
....
Yep, sometimes they make it easy to narrow down which groups provide value :)

I just like the ability to do this when I'm not carrying a film camera with me. This Coolpix A is vastly underrated online IMO.

Will be interesting to test drive these. I have tried most of the software available: VSCO, Mastin, Nik, Alien Skin and the results from those "film" emulators are almost, but not completely, entirely unlike any film I have ever shot.

It's good they have their own little club-house where they can hang-out together. That way they can reinforce one another's teeny tiny worldview without annoying the rest of us.

It's a Win-Win!
