Please excuse the Canon!

I've been looking for a decent point and shoot for "casual" stuff. I wanted a viewfinder, which are almost extinct. My other hopes were for a fast lens to hopefully be able to blur backgrounds which is very hard to do with mini sensors. Those and RAW shooting were important factors. The G15 fit the bill, especially with a 28-140mm f1.8-2.8 lens. I'll try not to pollute the forum very often, here's a couple shots, raw 100-140mm @ f2.8

Nice pick up, Rick. Prior to deciding on a mirrorless Nikon 1 camera, I looked at the G15. They're nice. I liked the fast lens and the viewfinder, also. It's also got a nice exposure compensation selector, right on top of the body.

The dials are very nice and well thought out. I can change EV with my thumb on the back wheel; aperture with my index finger on the front wheel and zoom without moving my hand.

I've had a G10 for a few years, and an S90. They're both excellent P/S cameras. The S90 is always in my vehicle 24/7. The G10 is for planned carry where size and weight is an issue.

Canon is not evil. At least not that evil.

I'm not really sure if it qualifies as a P/S but I have had a Nikon CoolPix 5700 for several years. It is only 5MP but it takes very good photos with the 8x zoom with ED glass. The only real drawback to it is the electronic viewfinder eats batteries like it is going out of style. I added a separate battery pack which takes 6AA's and doubles the amount of time over the recharbeable NiCad

I still use my Canon SX40 HS for most of my bird shots. Getting a lense for my Nikon that could compete in the zoom department would be way out of my budget.

But if I can sneak closer the Nikon easily gets the nod.

Here's a couple using the macro focusing option, this rose was about the size of a quarter

Both shot in RAW at f1.8

Due to my spending during the last few weeks and my wife's love of Fuji my new point and shoot is a HS30EXR::what::,perhaps we should have a post your none Nikon point and shoot thread, with appropriate health warnings naturally.

I really wanted a Nikon, but the lack of a viewfinder on their latest models drove me to Canon. The other most important feature was the lens, max aperature of f1.8 and stays down to f2.8 fully zoomed at 120mm. Nikon has a 1.8, but only at the widest focal length and then it shoots up fast. With these little sensors you need a large aperature for any chance of background blur. Granted the viewfinder is not great, but on a bright sunny day or in a crowd, I'll be glad I have it.

Canon makes good P&S cameras... I am looking for something compact for pocket on the MC... often if I have to stop, get off unpack the DSLR etc, I will not get the shot... some places you cannot safely park... With a P&S in my pocket or tank bag, I can stop quickly, grab a shot and go...

I have a canon now with a low mp and low zoom... I am looking to replace that...

Good luck with yours!!! :)

Does your budget stretch to around $250 for this replacement? If so, allow me to submit the Canon Powershot SX 260 HS for your consideration. I recommended one of these to a non-photography minded friend of mine recently and they're crazy about it. Having had a little time to play with it, I can tell you it's a whole lotta point and shoot for the price point.

Even has P, S, A & M modes!

Rick, you inspired me to check my 'ol S90. I discovered that it brackets up to +/-2. I've had it for a few years and didn't know. It's amazing what you can discover by reading. I dusted it off. It still works. Now, back to the console you Canon dog.
