Sandhill Crane taking off on a cold morning. Note the ice ring around the leg. I have often seen these rings develop on cranes when they overnight in a pond in freezing weather. Since they sleep standing on one leg at a time, the ring is larger on one leg than the other.

These Sandhill Cranes are approaching a field where they will be foraging with a couple hundred other cranes. This is very likely a family unit. Cranes pair for life and stay together year around, and the immature offspring stay with their parents for about a year after they are born. (Bosque Del Apache, NM)
