Right now I have the D5100 and the lens it came with and a bag and SD card.

what else do I need? (besides lenses)

do I need a lens hood?, a polarized lens cover?, what kind of cleaning kit?

I dont want to waste money getting things I don't need, so I am looking for some advice.

I got the camera to take sports photos both indoors and out.

UV filter to serve as a lens protector.
Lens cleaner kit
When you find you need a flash don't skimp. Buy more than you think you will need - wished I had done so.
Polarizer depending on what you might shoot.

uv filter protects the lens from sun? Is sun bad for the lens?

do I clean the mirrors in the camera body? how exactly do i do that? with a cleaner (windex) or just with a brush, or just with air?

Best advice- Start Shooting!
Then you'll know what you are falling short of with the current equipment you have.
You'll also realize what sorta photography you are more passionate about & spend more money on.

If money is not a concern & you would like to buy new stuff, then the entire range of Nikon's products are well worth it :p

To clean your lens - LensPen.
UV or normal filter to protect your lens (if you so wish).
Hood - depends if you're getting flares when taking pics now.

Sports photography - a nice reach lens which is fast (and will no doubt cost you plenty of money!)

In the meantime, sit down with the camera and lens you have, and just go through the manual and try everything out you can :)

2ball: I bought a book myself, filters, and a lens hood. Next is a external flash and one more lense. I need to get the blower thing every one talks about for cleaner the sensor of dust.

UV won't hurt your lens. Its to keep things from your much more expensive (than a UV filter) lens glass from being damaged.

I agree with what others have said. Go take photos, read the manual, and have fun!!!!
A UV or clear filter is really a good idea. It helps protect your lens. Replacing a filter will not hurt your wallet as much as having to replace a lens. Do get a good qualilty filter, though. I have used Hoya, B&W, and Nikon filters for years without any image degradation. If you get a cheap, poor quality filter, it will affect the images your lens takes. Don't forget, the light must pass through the filter, too, not just the lens.

Go out and have fun with your camera!!
