My D5100 is more than a year old and today I noticed that the viewfinder alignment is quite a bit off. When I click a photo using the viewfinder the resulting image is shifted about 20% to the up and left. In other words I lose 20% of picture from the right and lower margin and gain 20% on the top and left. It does not happen when using the live view to shoot photos. I cant seem to get around this problem. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I remember seeing a couple of threads some months ago about the mirror coming loose, or getting stuck on the D5100.
Not sure if your problem sounds the same or not..
I think Marilynne was one of the D5100 owners who had problems, hopefully she will see your thread and comment if the problem is the same as her camera had.

I took my D5100 to authorized nikon repair shop in Atlanta. When I told him that I had manipulated my mirror recently to release a stuck mirror, he said he knows exactly where the problem is. I might have manipulated the mirror enough to cause it to lose its alignment. He said it should be a quick fix and no parts need to be ordered. We will see. He kept my camera and will call me with a quote tomorrow.

Lesson Learned - never play with the delicate interiors of a DSLR.

What should be a reasonable estimate for this kind of a job? I don't want to pay 200-300 dollars for this.
