Trading up?

Might see if I can convince one of my friends who's a total beginner to trade bodies (+ lenses and accessories on my end of things): my 5100 for his 7000. Rough market value right now seems to be ~$3-350 apart and it would be a pretty even deal.

I feel that it will take him forever to fully wrap his hands around all of 7000's features, whereas I'm starting to want more technical things for my 5100. That and he wants some new lenses to try out different gear and I'm actually quite set and comfortable with what I would have left if he'd consider the trade.

Opinions?

hmmm... i think the body upgrade/exchange is good one, but you are giving away a lot of glass.. and some good ones which you may just want to buy again

maybe you could strike a deal with only the bodies with some cash or something else?

I kinda agree with WhiteLight - you're still in the DX category - won't you want to use those same lenses with a d7000, or are you going to buy new glass?

I think it could benifit both of you. He'll get a more user friendly camera, and you'll get a more advanced camera you won't outgrow anytime soon. Only concern is the lenses... Maybe you could arrange some kind of sharing lenses? Or get a couple of zoom lenses to cover the range for the meantime. My buddy just got a 3100 and I let him borrow some of my FX lenses. Mainly the 70-300.

+1 - That is a win-win.

It's nice to have a friend who is generous like you.

I wasn't clear on the lenses- I'd trade the 35 1.8G and my 50 2, batteries, grip, one step-up ring for filters. I won't be able to use non-AI 50 on a 7000 anyway, and 35 1.8 is my least favorite right now, so I might look into a vintage AI replacement for that if I feel the need to have 50mm range. Losing my 50(75) is really no biggie since I'll still have my 70-300.
