I bought a reverse ring for my 18-55mm kit lens. I fixed it and it got fitted nicely. also I'm getting the focus nicely.

only problem is that the "f" number on my D5200 comes as "--" thus not allowing to take the pictures. What am i doing wrong ? how can take micro photography on my D5200 using this ring.

It is because the electrical contacts on the lens are now sticking out into the air. The camera doesn't even think that you have a lens attached.
You will have to set to manual mode and estimate the exposure by trial and error I'm afraid.
I have the same issues with reversed lenses on my D5100.

Yes, thanks for the reply Andy. I kept trying and it worked... lighting also needs to be very good. If not it will not work. Thanks all for comments.

The shutter arm is sprung and closes to it's smallest aperture when not fitted to the camera.
Look for the aperture tag on the rear of the lens (now the front when reversed) and move it with a finger. If you want to have the shutter set somewhere just move the tag to the position you want and use a bit of masking tape or Blu tac to set in position.
I use Blu tac but dont just pull it off or you may lose a bit in the gap. Move the tag towards a wider aperture as you remove it and it will come off in one piece.
