Problem using Fn button

I cannot figure out how to use the Fn button, I had the same problem with my D90 so the problem is me. I have followed instructions from various sources to no avail. For instance, I want to use the horizon line when Fn is pressed but when I set it up for this and press Fn nothing happens. I must be really really stupid. This button seems to be very useful if I could only get it to work. If anyone has a step by step guide I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Brian

So you've gone into the Custom Settings menu, f3 option (Assign Fn Button) and selected "Viewfinder virtual horizon", yes? Because that's really all that's required. Now when you press the Fn button you should see guides at the bottom and right edges of the frame when looking through the viewfinder:

I've known a couple people who were expecting to see this VH in the viewfinder:

But this Virtual Horizon only displays in LiveView (it might look slightly different on your D7000):

Thanks for your reply. Did as suggested but all I get is a seven bar line at the bottom, none at the side.

That may be as good as it gets with the D7000. I do know Nikon models of more recent manufacture have two VH indicators and since the VH is showing at the bottom of the viewfinder I think it safe to assume the function is working correctly for your camera.

The only Fn option for viewing level is horizon on the D7000.

I had to get my D7000 out to verify that because I don't use it much and forgot. It was a surprise to me how dim the VF on a crop sensor camera, being so spoiled by the big bright OFV of the D8x0 series and especially the Z6 which is best of all for seeing detail even in low light
