No option to record custom WB -new Z6lll

Hope somebody here can help. I have a brand new four day old Z6lll.
Been going through all the menus, customizing my settings and button functions. And now I’m trying to record a custom white balance, but there is no option to record a new setting.
I can access all the slots “PRE – 1 – 6“ , but there’s no option to record a new WB.

I’ve tried going through the main shooting menu to White Balance, I’ve tried assigning one of the custom buttons on the body and also I have it in the “info“ menu, and all of them will show me the presets, but not give me the option to record a new one

Maybe I messed something up when customizing my settings? I have scoured the Internet and every tutorial says the same thing and there should be an option to record a new point, but there isn’t…
Also when getting to the presets I’ve tried holding down the OK button, and every other button on the camera. No dice.

Coming from 22 yrs of Nikon DSLR’s, and am not a newbie…. Just new to mirrorless.

Thanks. It is what I’m looking for- but it’s not working.
As I said, I’ve been making a lot of changes to the stock settings trying to get to a base working setting for User-1,2,3.
Perhaps made a change that’s not allowing or showing the manual measurements?

At the moment my WB is set on Fn2. -the lower button- on front of body. Can’t imagine that make a difference though.

Can’t get the Pre to flash & do a custom reading.
The only caveat I see are can not be measured during high-speed frame capture + or multiple exposures. Don't have a z6II also haven't used custom white balance since starting shooting RAW and PP. Maybe some Z user will come along to help.

That is what I hoped.

But- just now was able to record a custom WB- while in video mode.
So my follow-up question, to other Z6lll owners, is that the only way that we can record a custom white balance? Do we have to be in video mode to record it?

I can still choose that preset for my stills, but I’m used to being able to set a white balance from whatever mode I’m in.
None of the “Z” tutorials on YT I can find mention you have to be in video mode first, but most of them aren’t Z6lll specific.

Ok then. In the manual it does make it seem like you can do this in either Photo or Video- section 4 of “Direct Measurement “ WB, says this:
Position the white balance target (r) over a white or gray object and measure a value for preset manual white balance.

  • Position the target (r) using the multi selector.
  • To measure white balance, press the shutter-release button all the way down or press J. White balance can be measured multiple times while direct measurement mode is in effect.
  • You can also position the target (r) and measure white balance by tapping the display.
  • ****Target selection will not be available if an optional flash unit is attached. Frame the shot so that the white or gray reference object is in the center of the display.
Does this mean we can’t do a custom WB with flash? That is not good. 99% of the time I use flash is mixing with available light and often gelling the flash to get close to the ambient. I need to get good custom WB with flash.

Also what’s considered “High speed capture”?

*******UPDATE********
Fixed. I suspected that in making my button customizations I must have messed up somewhere. Took camera back to Dodd where I bought it and we compared mine to an out of the box one.
For others just getting into newer mirrorless bodies- there are some menu items that you can access to USE- as is- but not change.
Also I had switched my Fn1 (WB) to Fn2 and when I chose the control, it was from the upper group of settings that you get just by Pressing a button.
Cant change those. Use them, but not modify

In the Custom Settings f2-scroll down to "Press+Command Dials" list and choose WB from there.
THEN you have the Measure WB option.

I apologize to anyone I was getting snarky with who were trying to help. You were telling me the correct thing, but I didn't understand a part of it, and got frustrated. Couldn't believe I couldn't get a custom WB in Photo. Glad I was wrong.....
But I do have a deeper understanding of how the menus are working now.

Thanks!

Although still am unclear on what they mean by "High Speed Capture"- do they mean really fast shutter speeds? Or if you have continuous release drive on (5,7,20 fps etc?)

Glad you were able to get it solved and posted the answer.

From an online search

High-speed capture, often referred to as high-speed photography or videography, involves recording fast-moving objects or events at very high frame rates. This technique allows you to capture and analyze phenomena that are too quick for the human eye to see. Here are some key points:

High-speed Photography: This involves taking still photographs with very short exposure times, typically 1 millisecond (1/1000 of a second) or shorter. This can capture moments like a water droplet splashing or a balloon popping in incredible detail.

Thanks Marilynne! Sounds reasonable

***Update again...***
OK. I figured out how to get my Preset measurement and had it on the Fn1 button as many wildlife guys have reccomented, but coming from- and still using my DSLRs- D850 w/grip and D810 I am used to fully wrapping my fingers around the bigger grips and on the Z6III I keep hitting the Fn1 or 2 buttons, especially when wearing gloves and accidentally changing my WB or Focus Area modes. The WB is particularly a problem.
So finally I tried to assign WB to a different control button. The Drive mode button on back upper left seemed like a good candidate. I'm fine to be able to change from Single shot to Low or High speed capture on the "I" menu as I don't change that often.
And seems to work on that Release Mode/Protect button on PRE.
Press once to activate
Press and hold a bit to get the measurement square and hit shutter to measure. Voila- Custom WB recorded.
I think this will be a better location for me.

Now I need to figure a better use for the Fn1 button. Happy to hear suggestions. I shoot events more than wildlife so any of you who have the Z6III, Z8 or 9, love to hear how you configure ALL your controls.
