Depends on what Nikon camera body you are using! If its a DX body, then yes the 55-200mm 1.4-5.6G ED DX VR or AFS f/4- 5.6G IF-ED DX VR is a good lens purchase. But why settle for just 200mm when for another $100 or so, you can get the 100mm longer Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens.

I'm gonna take a wild stab at this and say, as you're in the D3100 forum, you have that body.

I think you've confused yourself with those lenses.
There is no f/1.4-5.6 55-200m lens in any shape or format by Nikon - heck if there was, I think the price would be quite high!

The only available (Nikon) options for the focal lengths you want are;

Nikon (Nikkor) AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED DX
Nikon (Nikkor) AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR DX

As you can see, the only substantial difference is the VR capability and current (UK) prices puts the VR at a lower price, which is a no brainer as far as choices goes between the two.

Or as Bill suggested, the 55-300mm is only about £90 more ($~140) - depends on your budget and needs of course :)

I belive that teetam meant the 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G
He/she just used a period . (the wrong symbol) instead of a colon : (the right symbol) between the 1 and the 4.

I've just bought the 55 - 300 mm lens to compliment my 18 - 55 mm, and I can't recommend it enough! One bit of advice, which will apply also to the 55-200mm (But not as much) is that hand-held shots really benefit from a monopod or tripod at the top end... If you are looking at either lens and don't have a 'pod, I'd advise to budget one in.... Even a £20 monopod is a big help at full zoom!

I ordered a Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 af-s vr dx black lens and have received a Nikkor 55-200mm af-s 1:4-5.6g ed dx vr.
It works fine as I have tried it, I just wondered being a novice if there was a difference.
The Camera I have is a Nikon D50.
