I have a Nikon Lens VR AF-S Nikkor 200-500 1:5.6E ED. Which I use with a Z9 body. It seems to work great doing birds. However lately it seems to have difficulty focusing. It chatters. I focus on a bird and the auto focus starts hunting. The results are several photos out of focus, suddenly one in focus followed by several out of focus. Is this a lens problem

Believe it or not, the original FTZ adapter has a firmware update. But since this is for a Z9, you would be using the FTZ-II and there is no updated firmware for that.

Are you using a teleconverter here? I would try removing that from the equation if so.

Have you tried cleaning the contact on the lens, FTZ adapter and camera.
Yes. Thank you. I did wipe then down with lens cleaner. Did not solve problems. As it turns out, I had a brief Discussion with a Nikon technical representative this past weekend at a nearby large camera store……. He made the comment that what I was seeing is common when Z9 is attached to an older style lens. He said that the older lens was not capable of keeping up with the high speed, focusing instructions coming from the Z9 camera. I asked what the solution was. He said I suggest you purchase a Z Lens. He said they have improved focus devices that can work with the new Z lines of cameras. Especially the Z9 and Z 8. So I did that. I bought a Z600 mm f.6.3. I have tested it out over the past several days. The difference is amazing.

Yes the lens and adapter are not compatible with the high speed of the Z9 camera. I bought a Z600mm f6.3. Problem solved.
